Application of Activated Alumina as Adsorbent
2024-12-18

The main industrial applications of activated alumina as an adsorbent include gas drying, liquid drying, water purification, selective adsorption in the petroleum industry, and chromatographic separation processes.

Activated alumina has a strong affinity for water and is widely used in gas drying. The gases that can be dried with activated alumina mainly include hydrogen oxide, carbon dioxide, natural gas, etc. Due to the large amount of heat released during the adsorption of water by activated alumina, the application should be designed based on comprehensive factors such as drying capacity, drying speed, heat transfer, and regeneration method.

Activated alumina manufacturers state that the liquids that can be dried from activated alumina mainly include aromatic hydrocarbons, high molecular weight olefins, etc. These liquids do not react or polymerize when in contact with alumina, and the dry liquid does not contain components that are easily adsorbed on the surface of alumina and difficult to remove during regeneration.

1. In terms of water purification, activated alumina manufacturers have stated that in addition to being mainly used to remove fluoride from drinking water, activated alumina is also effective in eliminating the color and odor of industrial wastewater. In addition, it is widely used for carbohydrate recovery, selective adsorption, and maintenance of power system oils.

2. In the field of color analysis, activated alumina is also a traditional layer analysis material. To some extent, it is adsorbed by almost all organic compounds (excluding saturated fats). Activated alumina for industrial layer analysis can be classified as neutral, acidic, and alkaline. Neutral alumina is commonly used for separating steroids, carbohydrates, esters, acetaldehyde, alcohol, weak acids, and organic compounds containing weak bases. Alkaline alumina generally contains alkali metal ions and exhibits strong ion exchange properties when adsorbing aqueous media and alkaline amino acids, amines, and other alkaline substances. This type of alumina can adsorb aromatic or other similar unsaturated compounds in organic solvents. Acidic alumina is produced during the acid washing process of cation exchange and can be used to separate organic ions such as acidic amino acids, aromatic acids, hydroxy acids, and acidic organic molecules.

Activated alumina manufacturers state that activated alumina has a wide range of applications, some of which can be used for water treatment and defluorination, while others can be widely used as adsorbents, desiccants, catalysts, and catalyst carriers.

Activated alumina manufacturers have stated that with the increasing development of the chemical industry and the focus on environmental protection, the demand for alumina in the market has rapidly increased, and higher requirements have been put forward for its performance. The preparation method is closely related to its performance. At present, the low-cost and green carbonization method is used to produce activated alumina carrier in industry, and the sol gel method has also become a new research hotspot in the field of carrier preparation. On the other hand, the production of activated alumina with high specific gravity, pore size distribution, thermal stability, and good water resistance will also receive more attention.
