China’s Energy and Chemical Spot Valuation Index (CECSAI) stood at 1,323.83 points on October 20, 2026, down 0.64% from the previous working day. Data from the Xinhua Index showed that the decline was accompanied by a retreat in the petroleum sector valuation index, which fell to 1,369.42 points.
The movement indicates that lower crude oil prices weakened the cost side of the chemical sector. At the same time, relatively soft downstream demand contributed to high spot prices for many products moving back from elevated levels. The decline therefore reflects pressure from both raw material costs and demand conditions.
For market participants, the immediate focus is whether the pullback remains concentrated in spot prices or develops into a broader adjustment across the energy and chemical market. The direction of crude oil prices and the strength of downstream demand will remain key variables in assessing whether cost pressure and price weakness continue.
